A survey of marine endangered animals to study the population and distribution in Trang on 13-17 March 2026.
- Mr. Chinnakorn Thongchai, a scientist from The Center for Scientific and Technological Equipment, Walailak University, participated in an aerial survey of rare marine animals from March 13–17, 2025. This survey was conducted in collaboration with Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center to study the population and distribution of marine endangered animals along the coastal areas of Trang Province. The survey was carried out using aerial survey methods, employing a fixed-wing aircraft. Line transect techniques were applied in the areas of Libong Island, Muk Island, Pak Meng Beach, Pak Khlong Village, Sikao Bay, Laem Sai, and nearby islands in Trang Province.
- Preliminary results from direct counts revealed at least 73 dugongs, 119 sea turtles, and 32 Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins. The findings by area are as follows:
- - Libong Island: 62 dugongs, 100 sea turtles, and 30 Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins.
- - Ngai Island and Muk Island: 6 dugongs and 13 sea turtles.
- - Pak Meng Beach, Pak Khlong Village, and Laem Sai: 5 dugongs, 6 sea turtles, and 2 Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins.
- In addition, four mother–calf pairs of dugongs and four mother–calf pairs of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins were observed. Dugongs exhibiting mating and courtship behaviors were also recorded, indicating reproductive maturity and a healthy population.
- The data obtained from this survey will be further analyzed to estimate the true population size of rare marine species in Trang Province. These findings will serve as essential information to support conservation policies and sustainable marine resource management in Thailand.
