Aerial survey of endangered marine species to study the population and distribution in in Surat Thani Province on March 27 to April 2, 2026.
- Mr. Chinnakorn Thongchai, a scientist from The Center for Scientific and Technological Equipment, Walailak University participated in an aerial survey of endangered marine species from March 27 to April 2, 2026. The mission was conducted in collaboration with marine and coastal resources research center, central gulf of thailand.
- The survey aimed to assess the population size and distribution of endangered marine species along the coastal areas of Surat Thani Province. The study was carried out using an aerial survey method with a two-seat fixed-wing aircraft, in collaboration with volunteer pilot Mr. Eduardo Angelo Loigorri. Line transect surveys were conducted over Phum Riang Bay, Mu Ko Ang Thong, Koh Samui, and the coastal areas of Don Sak District.
- Survey results recorded a total of 3 dugongs, including one mother–calf pair; 13 green sea turtles; 3 Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins; 10–20 Irrawaddy dolphins; and 7–10 finless porpoises.
- Preliminary health assessments based on visual observations indicated that the dugongs exhibited normal feeding behavior over seagrass beds and nursing behavior. Their body condition was classified as good to robust (Body Condition Score: 4/5). Respiratory rates were approximately 1–2 breaths per 5 minutes, with normal breathing patterns observed.
- The data collected from this survey will be further analyzed to estimate the actual population size of rare marine species in Surat Thani Province. The findings will contribute to strengthening conservation policies and sustainable marine resource management in Thailand.
