A survey of marine endangered animals to study the population and distribution in Krabi
- Mr. Chinnakorn Thongchai, a scientist of The Center for Scientific and Technological Equipment Walailak University together with Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center (Lower Andaman Sea) and Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center (Central Gulf of Thailand), participated an aerial survey to study the population and distribution of marine endangered animals on March 27th – April 1st 2022 in Krabi. A line transect sampling method was used during flying over Krabi Islands with a volunteer pilot, Mr. Eduardo Angelo Loigorri while boat survey with an unmanned aerial vehicle (Drone) was over Koh Pu, Koh Sriboya, Ao Nam Mao area and nearby islands.
- The preliminary survey found 34 dugongs (7 mother-calf pairs), 7 humpback dolphins (Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin, Sousa chinensis) and 36 sea turtles. It was found that the dugong behaved grazing on sea grasses and mating. Moreover, the number of mother-calf pairs is more than every year which indicates the increasing of dugong population in this area. In addition, this increasing trend is also shown in humpback dolphins and sea turtles.
